Rotary District 6760      Lead The Way !

11-8-2006

Subscriber,  Service Above Self is serious business.  After all, making the world a better place is a BIG job!  With Club administration, reports to file, fundraisers to coordinate.... it may start to feel like REAL WORK... and it is.  So if you feel like you're giving your life away, congratulations!  Upon reflection, you may realize it's what we're meant to do.  And your life could not be better spent.  -- Ken Ivey

 Governor's Notes

As Freda Sue and I are finishing our visits with the sixty-five clubs in District 6760, we look back over the past few months with amazement.  There are so many wonderful things going on in our district, so many devoted Rotarians living our motto of "Service above Self," so many clubs making life better in their community and around the world.  There are three recognition opportunities for outstanding Rotary clubs that will be awarded in the spring of 2007, and I want our deserving clubs to receive the recognition they have earned. You can learn more about each of these awards by visiting the RI Web site's Awards and Recognition section.  To access this section of the Web site, visit www.rotary.org, click on "RI Programs," and look for the "Awards and Recognition" link on the left side of the menu.  Please take careful note of the deadlines for each of these awards.  In order to be considered, nominations must arrive at RI World Headquarters by the deadlines indicated below.

Significant Achievement Award

Deadline: 15 March 2007
For Web materials, visit: http://www.rotary.org/programs/awards /club/significant.html
This award recognizes outstanding club service projects. To be eligible, projects must:
•       address a significant problem or need in the local community
•       involve most or all of the club members in personal rather than monetary service
•       be commensurate with the club's size and resources
•       be capable of emulation by other Rotary clubs
•       be currently active or reach a conclusion during the Rotary year for which the award is given
•       be carried out by a single Rotary club
No club may receive the award more than once for the same project. District governors may forward one nomination to RI for consideration, to arrive at RI no later than 15 March 2007. Multiple nominations from a single district will not be considered.

Presidential Citation
Deadline: 15 April 2007
For Web materials, visit:
http://www.rotary.org/programs/awards /club/presidential.html

The Presidential Citation program is revised on an annual basis by the RI president to complement the president's theme for the year. This year’s program supports President Bill Boyd’s Lead the Way theme. The 2006-07 Presidential Citation brochure, available on the Web, highlights different activities that a club can participate in to qualify for this award. In addition to accomplishing four activities (each from a different category of service as found in the citation brochure), clubs must verify that they have achieved  a net increase of at least one member prior to 1 April 2007.

Club presidents must fill out and sign the Presidential Citation Certification Form and send it to their district governors for endorsement. District governors must then submit a list of qualifying clubs to RI no later than 15 April 2007. Please note that RI does not require the original certification forms, only a list of the qualifying clubs.

I am hoping to be able to submit 100% of the clubs in District 6760 for the Presidential Citation this year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Public Relations Award
Deadline: 15 May 2007
For Web materials, visit:
http://www.rotary.org/programs/awards /club/public.html

The purpose of this award is to recognize Rotary clubs that have generated increased awareness and understanding of Rotary through outstanding media coverage or public relations efforts. Public relations activities initiated up to one year prior to 15 March 2007 are eligible for this year’s award. It is important to note that this award recognizes a successful media campaign by a club to demonstrably improve Rotary’s visibility and image within the community.

For more information on developing effective public relations, please consult the RI Web site section on Public Relations at: http://www.rotary.org/support/prtools /index.html.

As with the Significant Achievement Award, no club may receive the award more than once for the same project. District governors may forward one nomination to RI for consideration, to arrive at RI no later than 15 May 2007. Multiple nominations from a single district will not be considered.

I wanted to make you aware of these recognition opportunities early enough in the Rotary year for you to be able to complete and document your activities before the deadlines.

Continue to Lead the Way!  Slick.

Tech Tips --
With as much time as we all spend on the computer, it's difficult to keep track of all the little things that pop up during the course of our day.  A really neat program I use to stay focused and organized is EverNote.  EverNote lets you easily store and quickly access typed and handwritten memos, webpage excerpts, emails, phone messages, addresses, passwords, brainstorms, sketches, documents and more! Download the FREE version with no expiration.  The paid version includes features for synchronizing - but I run it from a USB key fob -- so no sync is required!

From the archives of "What Paul Harris Said",

I am a Rotarian for the simple reason that many others are Rotarians:  TO SERVE.

In 1990, when asked to join a small Rotary Club in California, I soon discovered what true "SERVICE" was all about.  We were delivering "Meals on Wheels" to the aged and indigent in our local community, yet we helped to sow the seeds of Village Banking in Costa Rica and in the Philippines.  And when I contributed to my first Paul Harris Fellow, I saw the power of what Rotary's collective financial resources could do TO SERVE mankind throughout the world.

In my profession I was soon "making up" at other Rotary Clubs.  I was meeting Rotarians from Hong Kong, Japan, England, France, Russia, and many other nations, who despite our cultural and political differences, were also SERVING to improve the lives of others.  How fascinating to meet other men and women - much different on the surface than me - yet possessing the same objective as Rotarians:  TO SERVE.

Having moved a few times over the years, I am now in my third Rotary Club.  I could not imagine my life without Rotary.  To be able to go anywhere and have a platform TO SERVE the needs of others is an awesome opportunity Rotary has provided me.  To have learned and been inspired by so many of my fellow Rotarians - in each of the three clubs and districts I have belonged to - as well as the many Rotarians throughout the world I have had the privilege to meet, has also been an awesome opportunity.

I have never taken lightly Rotary International's Motto of "SERVICE ABOVE SELF" - three simple, yet powerful words which allow each Rotarian to transcend our differences and unite as one TO SERVE.
