[fname],
this was my first District
Conference, also qualifying it for
me as the best one ever! :) Ok,
seriously - it was a great time of
fellowship, awe, inspiration, fun,
rejuvenation and
reflection. Everyone put a great
deal of themselves into their
presentations, and it showed. We
Rotarians have accomplished much and
touched the lives of many. That's
something we should all be very
proud of. -- Ken Ivey

Governor's
Notes

Freda Sue and I want to
say a big "thank you" to
all the people who made
the District Conference
a success, including
Alex and Marie Broussard
(Bill Boyd's very
personable
representatives who are
obviously passionate
about Rotary), Becci
Bookner and her super
hard-working, dedicated
conference committee,
and the Doubletree
staff, who always smiled
and made their tasks
look easy. If you
attended the Conference,
you understand why Becci
told you in advance that
you would never feel the
same about Rotary
again. If you did not
attend, you missed a
wonderful week-end of
Rotary fellowship,
frivolity, and even a
few tears. Starting
with a welcome from
Charlie Daniels filmed
especially for the
Conference and ending
with a visit from Dolly
Parton (?), excellent
programs were presented
on Young Generations,
The Rotary Foundation,
and World Community
Projects, with special
emphasis throughout on
literacy. The key-note
speaker, Byron Trauger,
was, in a word,
FANTASTIC. A Rotarian
and former Rotary
Ambassadorial Scholar,
Byron serves as Chairman
of the Board of Governor
Bredesen's Books from
Birth Foundation. He
was introduced by Lady
Bird, a Rotarian,
Assistant District
Governor for Rotary
District 6760, and
Executive Director of
the Books from Birth
Program throughout the
state. Byron's talk was
informative,
inspirational, clever,
and moving. We knew we
were fortunate to have
him set the tone for the
Conference, but we
didn't know HOW
fortunate until after he
spoke. My home club,
Murfreesboro, made a
ten-thousand-dollar
($10,000) donation to
Byron for Books from
Birth, joining over half
the other clubs in the
District in support of
this very worthwhile
program. Our district
is definitely "Jazzed
about Literacy."
Space and time
constraints prevent me
from telling you about
all the other wonderful
things that happened at
the Conference. If you
were there, you know.
If you were not, then
you need to plan on
going next year. This
district is on the move,
as evidenced by the
awards given at the
Conference:
- Service above Self
Award (only 150 were
given in the 530
districts of the Rotary
world this year) was
given to Ronnie
Strickland for his
service in Honduras.

- Rotarian of the Year
in District 6760 was
presented to Neal Beard
of the Lawrenceburg
Club. Under his
leadership, Neal's club
this year had almost 90%
attendance, became a
100% Paul Harris Fellow
Club, and grossed over
$450,000 through
fund-raisers to be used
for community and
international projects.
- A special Governor's
award to the Most
Outstanding Club in
District 6760 went to
Lawrenceburg for their
exceptional
accomplishments during
the Rotary year.

later).
The District Conference
was the celebration of a
year of projects, service,
and hard work, particularly
by those who want to put
Service above Self. Thank
you for all you have done to
contribute to the many
successes in District 6760.
We still have two months
left in this Rotary year, so
we aren't finished yet.!
Continue to Lead the
Way.

Group Study Exchange for 2008
The 2008 exchange will be a fall/spring travel schedule with District 1030 in the Yorkshire section of England. The 6760 group will travel to British soil September 18, 2007, and return October 18, 2007. The 1030 group will arrive April 15, 2008, and they will depart approximately May 15, 2008. Their District Conference will be October 5- 7, 2007. It will take place on a ferry in the North Sea traveling to Amsterdam. They will have the added opportunity to tour Amsterdam in the exchange.
We will be having to recruit a team in May and June for the outgoing leg of the exchange. We are asking that all applications for Team Leader and Team Member be received by the GSE committee by June 23, 2007. The interviews will take place on July 7th. Applications can be downloaded from the Rotary Download Center.
The ages for team members are 25-39. They cannot have a lineal kinship with a Rotary member and have to be employed in the district. They must be able to leave their employment for approximately one month.
All applications should be mailed to:
Frank McGinley, GSE Chairman
155 Williams Street
Savannah, TN 38372.
Help in finding good team member applicants and potential Rotarian team leaders is requested from all Rotarians in the district. This should be one of the more interesting and enjoyable exchanges in recent years.
Australian Rotarians Invade Middle Tennessee
By Judith Hodges
If the group of friendly persons assembled on the bucolic grounds of the home of Gary and Leslie Benmark in Joelton for a wonderful noontime cookout one Tuesday noon in mid-April did not sound like Middle Tennesseans, that is because many of them were Western Australians. Nine couples representing Rotary clubs in the Perth, Australia area have been guests of Middle Tennessee Rotarians during the second half of April under the auspices of a Rotary Friendship Exchange. This program gives participants an opportunity to experience other cultures by staying in the homes of Rotarians. Rotary Clubs have been very receptive with members of six middle Tennessee Rotary clubs hosting the eighteen Australian visitors. The aim is to advance international understanding and peace through personal contact across borders.
Officially a meeting of the Madison-Goodlettsville Rotary Club, the event was attended by several of the Rotarians from other local clubs who were hosting the enthusiastic Australians. Enthusiastic in some cases because they had just had five days in New York during the record-breaking northeast snowstorm! Middle Tennessee Rotarians were in a payback mode because last October, three couples from our local clubs were the grateful guests of the Western Australian Rotarians.
In addition to the cookout, members of the group have been kept very busy with trips to Cheekwood, the new Symphony Hall, the Jack Daniels Distillery, the Country Music Hall of Fame, and other sites of particular interest to individual visitors. They will return to Australia with a very positive impression of our country and its hospitable citizens.
The Madison-Goodlettsville Rotary Club normally meets every Tuesday noon at Hometown Buffet, 2151 Gallatin Pike at Rivergate. For additional information, contact President Gary Benmark at 615-876-7258.
