Subscriber,    it's not too late!  You still have time to pick up a little something for your sweetie.  SweetsIf chocolate doesn't have the same impact as it once did, try a weekend getaway!  Hmmm.   May 3-5 is the perfect weekend, and Murfreesboro is a great place for spending time with that special someone.  Besides, you'll be there anyway for the District Conference.  :) -- Ken Ivey

 Governor's Notes
When I was president of the Murfreesboro Rotary Club in 1995-96, I thought that club presidents had a lot of work to do during their year. Now I don't THINK it, I KNOW it. We have some 25 different committees, depending on how you want to count them. I did not count the President-Elect Training Seminar (PETS). There is no preparation for the Club President to do on this. The President's role is just to make sure that the President-Elect (PE) gets registered for the Seminar and gets there for it. Within those 25 committees, some of the club's committees are multi-member committees, such as the Will R. Manier Committee. At the District level we have about ten members on the Manier Committee. Conversely, the 4-Way Test Speech Contest is done with one member.

Now, you may say that we have too many committees. If so, which one(s) do we want to do without.....Youth Exchange, Membership Development, Grants????? I think that all of these committees are needed. Each one of these committees is there to do one thing.....and that is to help you and to help make your club a stronger club. In order to do this, the District Committees must have accurate and timely responses from the clubs. Presidents must use several resources, delegation and follow-up being toward the top of the list.

One of the more visible endeavors in our district is the Will R. Manier, Jr. Scholarship. (For more information, go to our district website at www.rotary6760.org). Each Rotarian in our district is assessed three dollars ($3.00) per year to fund these scholarships, so we are all involved in them. Your club should have already received information on this year's scholarships and should be in the process of recruiting and selecting applicants to be considered by the district committee.

Other endeavors with upcoming deadlines that you should be preparing for:
  • Short-term Youth Exchange Applications
  • Ambassadorial/Peace Scholarships
  • Presidential Citation Application
  • STAR Club Application
  • RYLA Applications
  • 4-Way Test Speech Contest
  • Registration for the District Conference
If you have questions about any of these, please don't hesitate to contact me, your Assistant District Governor, and/or members of the various District committees listed in your District directory.

Now for a report on proceeds from the ties and scarves that we auctioned off when I visited your clubs!! The present total that we have raised for The Rotary Foundation through this "fun" activity is $13,789!!! And we aren't through yet.....I am still awaiting reports from clubs who sold (or will sell) theirs at a later meeting. I hope to give you the final tally in the near future. My goal is to raise $15,000!!!! If your club has not yet submitted your tie/scarf donation to TRF, you need to do that before the end of this month so the donor and your club will be given credit in time to qualify for EREY (every Rotarian donating $100 every year) and STAR Club status. I am sure you know that you can download the donation form at www.rotary.org. Be sure to mark your donations to go to the ANNUAL FUND so that half of the money will return to our district in three years.

Thanks again for ALL you do for Rotary and the world. Continue to Lead the Way.

No Ordinary Event

The 2006-2007 District 6760 Annual Conference plans are well under way! A jazzed up weekend of special guests, motivational speakers, presentations, awards, “scores” of music, terrific food and more than 34 hours of opportunities to grow and share your love for Rotary are just a few of the reasons we are encouraging you to make your plans to attend.
District Conference
There are a couple of things you can do to support your club and this effort. If you sponsored a new member this year, bring that new Rotarian to the Conference! Encourage any of the Rotarians who are sitting at your table during lunch to make every effort to attend this conference particularly if they have not yet been to any district conference . Sometimes we forget that new members may not realize that meetings like this are the very best place to learn what Rotary is all about. First time attendees and new Rotarians have a special invitation!

Our committee is excited about showcasing our District and presenting a really memorable event, one that Governor Frazer and all 6760 Rotarians will be proud to attend, one that sets a new mark for a great mix of serious Rotary work, a tremendous Rutherford County welcome and unforgettable entertainment!

You don’t want to miss this weekend! Mark your calendar for May 4-5. You just will never be the same about Rotary after you come to our conference!

District Budget

A copy of the proposed district budget for 2007-2008 was mailed to all club presidents on Friday, February 9, with the request that it be given to club presidents-elect. The Presidents-Elect will be asked to vote on it at the district business session of the Multi-district PETS which is scheduled for March 23. Also included in the mailing was a notice of a proposed minor amendment to the District Rules of Procedure section which relates to the Leadership Academy. This proposal will be presented at the business session of the District Conference on May 4 for a vote by the delegates from the clubs. If club presidents do not receive this mailing by Friday, February 16, please notify PDG John Miles at: Jmiles6760@aol.com for duplicate copies. He may also be called at: 615-373-3870.

Another Life Saved!

On February 7 the Bone Marrow Committee received great news. Another life had been saved. This time it was Brooks Randolph, a plumber from Nashville, who was the perfect match for a fifty-three year old man who otherwise would have died as a result of his blood disease. Brooks was tested over four years ago in one of our drives in Nashville. At the moment Brooks does not know the name of the man his marrow saved, but he can be told, if the recipient wishes, in a few months when there is little or no risk of organ rejection. From that one drive in which Brooks was tested, we have heard from more than a dozen matches. There may be more in the future. A donor is allowed to donate marrow until they reach age sixty-one.

If you want to know more about how your club could conduct a drive, or if you want to know what to do if you know of someone in your community who needs a bone marrow donation, then you may want to see one in action and visit with a team conducting a drive. The next scheduled drive is in Nashville, at Vanderbilt University on April 2-3. The Rotary Club of Brentwood is the sponsor. You may volunteer to assist in this drive and learn first hand, if you wish. Our committee would be very excited to equip any club to conduct a drive. We will assist and discuss how to organize and fund a drive, how to promote volunteer support and testing, logistics, and how to involve other organizations such as churches, schools, and places of employment.

For additional information, contact: Tom Burton at 614-781-3000; or cell 615 972-9657, email-tburton@agapenashville.org. Your interest and action can save lives in your community, or anywhere in the world where a match is made.

Legislation Proposed

Two volumes of proposed legislation for the 2007 Council on Legislation are now available as PDF files. Download both volumes in the Council on Legislation http://www.rotary.org/support/council/index.html section.

Both volumes will also be available in French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish in late March. The Council will meet 22-28 April in Chicago.

Clubs and district conferences have until 22 February to submit their statements of support and opposition. Each statement may support or oppose one item of legislation and must be no longer than one side of a sheet of standard business stationery. Send statements along with the item number (for example, 07-036) to the Council Services Section at RI World Headquarters. Statements will be distributed to the Council’s voting members for review.
