Rotary District 6760      Lead The Way !

12-20-2006

Subscriber,  I'd like to wish you a very Merry Christmas. -- Ken Ivey

 Governor's Notes
Freda Sue and I went to Nashville to the Millennium Maxwell House Hotel Friday, and we were there from noon Friday until late Saturday afternoon, about 4:00 PM.  We observed and participated in an excellent training session for our Ambassadorial Scholars.  There were representatives from 16 different districts in attendance and about 30 scholars.  The training is a prerequisite before the scholars are allowed to travel abroad in the name of Rotary.

In District 6760 we have a total of four Ambassadorial Scholars, one Cultural Scholar and a coveted World Peace Scholar.  The Ambassadorial Scholars are:
  • Andrea Otte, sponsored by Jackson Old Hickory; Charles Baldwin, Counselor; assigned to Geneva, Switzerland;
  • Eben Cathey, sponsored by Smyrna; Robert Mullins, Counselor; assigned to South Africa;
  • Joshua Trent, sponsored by Murfreesboro; Slick Frazer, Counselor; assigned to Cambridge, England;
  • Mark Mallman, sponsored by Franklin Breakfast; Otey Walker, Counselor; assigned to Latrobe, Australia;
Cultural Ambassadorial Scholar is Philip Storey, sponsored by Jackson Old Hickory; Glen Vanderford, Counselor; not yet assigned;

World Peace Fellow is Andrea Fanta, Dickson, assigned to University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia.
The Ambassadorial Scholarship is funded by the District.  The cost is twenty-six thousand dollars ($26,000).  How do we get that money?  It is donated to The Rotary Foundation through your generous contributions and primarily from Paul Harris Fellowships.  When money is sent to The Rotary Foundation, the Foundation uses the interest from that money for three years.  Then half of that money is returned to the District for scholarships, GSE teams, and District Designated Funds.  We still have money in the District Designated Funds this year which can be used for club grants.  These are approved at the district level.  In other words, these requests get a quick up or down.  Send your request to DGE Rufus Clifford.

As the end of the year approaches, so does the deadline for submitting your application for one thousand dollars ($1,000) for the Blane Immunization Grant.  Just fill out the application and send it to DGE Rufus Clifford for his signature.

We trust that you and your family will have a wonderful holiday season.  Freda Sue and I will be joining our sons and their families in Germany and Austria during the period 19 December to 3 January, so we are expecting to have a grand time.  We may or may not have internet access during that time, so we will be "out of the loop" for a few days.  Thank you for making the first half of this Rotary year so special for us.  We look forward to a successful finish as you continue to Lead the Way.

Foundation Giving Can Mean Tax Relief  Time is running out!

Consider Making A Year End Gift!
Are you looking for a great dividend this year?  Make a gift of appreciated securities – common stock, bonds or mutual funds – to The Rotary Foundation before year end and send a message of international hope.  You may realize significant savings while serving others at the same time.   By transferring securities to The Rotary Foundation, you avoid paying capital gains taxes on the appreciated value of your gift!

Good Tax News You Can Use! Good Tax News You Can Use!
Under the new Pension Protection Act, individual donors who are 70 ˝ at the time of the gift may donate from $100 to $100,000 this year ( and next) from their Individual Retirement Account directly to The Rotary Foundation without increasing federal gross income for this tax year.  It is a great way to become a Paul Harris Society member or make the gift of a lifetime in your lifetime.

Please note that contributions must be outright to the Foundation without any benefit to the donor.  IRA gifts cannot be used to fund charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, donor advised funds or the pooled income fund.

The IRA assets must be transferred directly to the Foundation or it is recognized by the IRS as income.  Please contact your IRA administrator and the Foundation to assist with the process of transferring the desired percentage or amount of the IRA.

Other IRA Options to Consider
This is a great time to ensure that valid beneficiary designations are on file for your IRA.  If you have not already notified the Foundation that it is a beneficiary of your IRA, then you could become a Rotary Foundation Benefactor or Bequest Society member today!

 Editor's Corner Ken Ivey

This has been circulating on the internet for some time now, and I think it bears repeating.  Many have family members who are serving our country, some overseas, many in hostile territory.  As we celebrate Christmas, take a moment to pray for the safety and comfort of our service men and women.

A Different Christmas Poem

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.
Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
Transforming the yard to a winter delight.
The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.
My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep.
In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.

The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near,
But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear.
Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know, Then the
sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.
My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,
And I crept to the door just to see who was near.
Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,
A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.

A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,
Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.
Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,
Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.
"What are you doing?" I asked without fear,
"Come in this moment, it's freezing out here!
Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,
You should be home on a cold Christmas Eve!"

For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,
Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts..
To the window that danced with a warm fire's light
Then he sighed and he said "Its really all right,
I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night."
"It's my duty to stand at the front of the line,
That separates you from the darkest of times.
No one had to ask or beg or implore me,
I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before me.
My Gramps died at 'Pearl on a day in December,"
Then he sighed, "That's a Christmas 'Gram always remembers."
My dad stood his watch in the jungles of 'Nam',
And now it is my turn and so, here I am.
I've not seen my own son in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures, he's sure got her smile.

Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
The red, white, and blue... an American flag.
I can live through the cold and the being alone,
Away from my family, my house and my home.
I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,
I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.
I can carry the weight of killing another,
Or lay down my life with my sister and brother..
Who stand at the front against any and all,
To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall."

"So go back inside," he said, "harbor no fright,
Your family is waiting and I'll be all right."
"But isn't there something I can do, at the least,
"Give you money," I asked, "or prepare you a feast?
It seems all too little for all that you've done,
For being away from your wife and your son."

Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,
"Just tell us you love us, and never forget.
To fight for our rights back at home while we're gone,
To stand your own watch, no matter how long.
For when we come home, either standing or dead,
To know you remember we fought and we bled.
Is payment enough, and with that we will trust,
That we mattered to you as you mattered to us."
