[fname], this
issue of the Blast! marks the
anniversary of a year of Blast!
editing. The process has at times
been challenging and immensely
rewarding. I've learned a lot about
Rotary - and Rotarians this
year, watching the efforts of a few
on behalf of the District, make
tough decisions and sacrifice their
time for the benefit of all. At the
District Conference, I learned that
one person can make a difference,
and how even the smallest of clubs,
focused on Leading The Way, can make
a huge impact on the world - one
project at a time. You have all
made me very proud to be a Rotarian.

Governor's
Notes

The Rotary year is
nearly complete. Freda
Sue and I consider
ourselves so very
fortunate to have served
such a great
organization with such
outstanding Rotarians as
our members of District
6760. It has been one
of the most rewarding
years of our lives.
Thank you.
As we write our
last issue of the
BLAST!, we are at
the Rotary
International
Convention in Salt
Lake City, Utah.
The theme of the
convention is
Rendezvous in the
Rockies and is
billed as being at
"the crossroads of
the West." We
arrived Saturday,
June 16, and
immediately became
involved with the
activities of the
convention. Thus
far we have attended
an Evening of
Sensational
Entertainment (which
included, among many
other talented
musicians and
dancers, The Osmonds
Second Generation
and The
Five Browns). We
also attended an
inter-faith service,
which featured the
renowned Mormon
Tabernacle Choir.
Sunday we attended a
Paul Harris Fellow
Luncheon where we
were introduced to
the Trustees and
Directors of the
Rotary Foundation
and the Rotary
Board. The opening
ceremony of the
Convention was
headlined by Donny
Osmond. We also
attended a
Rendezvous in the
Park, which included
exhibits from the
early West. In all,
there are four
plenary sessions,
followed by numerous
break-out groups
addressing a variety
of issues. It is a
wonderful event and
an opportunity to
meet our fellow
Rotarians from 160
different
countries. Being
here brings home the
realization that we
are a truly
international
organization.
We will return
home on Thursday,
June 21, and have a
few days to "tie up
loose ends" and
submit final reports
for the Rotary
year. We are
pleased to announce
that 100% of the
clubs in District
6760 are "giving"
clubs to The Rotary
Foundation and that
we are approaching
the goal of
averaging one
hundred dollars
($100) per member
donation for this
year. I know that
many of you are in
the process of
finalizing your
club's donations to
TRF for the year,
and I feel
optimistic that we
will also reach this
goal. Thank you for
your support and
cooperation during
the year. I hope to
see as many of you
as possible in
Columbia on June 28
to celebrate with
Rufus Clifford at
his installation
dinner. You have
definitely Led the
Way this past year,
and I know you will
continue to show
that Rotary Shares
in the upcoming
year.

Family of
Rotary
It is
with sadness that I inform
you that Glen's mother
passed away last
night. As some of you may
know she had a stroke about
a month ago and
had gone through some rehab
but had been transferred
back to Methodist
Hospital in Memphis with
complications. Arrangements
are incomplete at
this time with Memphis
Funeral Home at Poplar and
I-240. At this time
we are looking at possibly
visitation on Tuesday
evening with the
service on Wednesday there
at the funeral home.
Editor's note:

requests, etc., in the

RI District 6760 Endorses
2008-09 Ambassadorial Scholar
Candidates
The
District 6760 Scholarship
Subcommittee reviewed applications
and interviewed applicants for the
Rotary Ambassadorial Academic-Year
(3) and
3-month Cultural Ambassadorial
Scholarship (1) on Saturday, May
26. The three applicants
selected for endorsement by
District 6760 are Paul Carls
(Rhodes College) nominated by
the Jackson Old Hickory Rotary
Club; George Marchetti (McGill
University) nominated by the
Green Hills Rotary Club; and
Masimba Mutamba (Martin
Methodist University) nominated
by the Pulaski Rotary Club.
The applicant that was selected
for District 6760 endorsement
for the
3-month Cultural Ambassadorial
Scholarship was Katherine Walker
Smith (University of Tennessee
at Knoxville) nominated by the
Nashville Rotary Club. As in
past years, the strength of the
applicant pool continues to be
impressive, although it is the
sincere hope of the committee
that more clubs will choose to
participate in this Rotary
Foundation educational program
by nominating other highly
qualified, deserving students to
compete for these scholarships.

RYLA
Application Deadline Extended.
It’s
time to get ready for District
6760’s
Rotary Youth Leadership Award
(RYLA), experience. It will be held
6-8 July at Austin Peay State
University in Clarksville,
Tennessee.
RYLA
is a three-day leadership
development program targeting
incoming high school sophomore and
juniors. The purpose of RYLA is to
develop personal leadership skills
and an interest in serving the
community, both core to
Rotary International's mission.
Having a great time while making
new friends with like-minded
youth from across the western
half of Tennessee seems to be a
natural consequence of this
process.
