 Governor's Notes

Freda Sue and I are getting close to having visited every club in District 6760.  We still have seven to visit in the next few weeks.  Everyone in our district should be proud to be a member of one of our clubs---there are so many good things being done for the betterment of mankind.  So many Rotarians are giving of their "four T's", as set forth by Past RI President Frank Devlyn:

THINKING
Hope for the less fortunate begins when we start thinking about the positive changes we can make in others’ lives.  In essence, we create awareness and take action to address needs worldwide.

TALENT
When Rotarians give of their talent and expertise to develop projects that build stronger communities, we transform the lives of millions of people, both locally and internationally.  We call this Service above Self.

TIME
When Rotarians devote their time to volunteer in the spirit of reaching out to others who need our help, we simply make the world a better place.  We encompass the Object of Rotary.

TREASURE
When Rotarians give of their treasure to support programs that educate, comfort, feed, heal, relieve thirst, provide shelter, and advance world understanding and peace, we find meaningful and lasting solutions to global problems.

Most Rotarians adhere to the "four T's" and look for more challenges.  I am proud to be your Governor and look forward to serving our fellow man for many years to come.

Continue to Lead the Way!  Slick.

The Permanent Fund Expectancies and Net Assets now total $505.3 million to secure tomorrow.

It has long been the goal of committed Rotarians to build a strong endowment and see the value of The Rotary Foundation Permanent Fund increase to over $500 million. This quarter that significant milestone has been reached. On 30 September 2006, the Permanent Fund's net assets were US $183.4 million and the estimated expectancies stood at approximately US $321.9 million.

Bequest Society Update
As of 30 September 2006, there were 5,133 Bequest Society commitments with an expected value of US $214 million. These commitments represent a significant percentage of the expectancies to the Permanent Fund. Thank you.

LIMITED TIME IRA CHARITABLE GIVING OPPORTUNITY FOR U.S. ROTARIANS
Between 19 August 2006 and 31 December 2007, individual U.S. donors who are 70 ½ at the time of the gift may annually transfer up to $100,000 from an IRA directly to The Rotary Foundation without increasing their federal gross income for that tax year. This is a great way to make a major gift or to fulfill your Paul Harris Society promise. Please contact your gift officer for further details.

Donor Advised Fund Update

Tech Tips --

Do you need a free bare bones word processor or spreadsheet that that provides functionality online, without you having to install anything on your desktop system?  Try Docs & Spreadsheets http://docs.google.com/.

Speaking of Google I found this nugget in one of my e-zines.  Google, the world's most popular Internet search engine, is famously minimalist, functional and professional. A new search engine, called Ms. Dewey  http://www.msdewey.com/, is the opposite of Google: It's minimally functional and unprofessional. The main search page is dominated by "Ms. Dewey," a lifelike avatar that makes comments and jokes about your searches. She drinks booze, shoots rubber bands at you and generally entertains you while you're searching.  OK, that's not too efficient, but the technology behind it is amazing!

Snowball Express Update

Subject: [Info] Snowball Express Project Update
Date: Mon, 16 Oct 2006 11:58:31 -0700

Dear Governor,

What can I say... it's really snowballing!

There are changes on almost a daily basis as Rotary clubs across America, major corporations and individuals are stepping up to help. The best source of news about Snowball Express is on the web site:
http://www.snowballexpress.org

The site is being revised almost daily (and sometimes several times per day). The event has been written up in newspapers including Stars & Stripes, the L.A. Times and others. Michael Kerr, the founder and a member of the Costa Mesa Rotary club, has been interviewed by numerous radio stations across the U.S... sometimes two or three per day. We're now working to get full page ads published by major newspapers and features written for newspapers and magazines.

HBO will be filming a documentary about the event....Read more ....

Call for Group Study Exchange Applications To Visit Provence and the French Riviera in 2007

The 2007 Group Study Exchange will be with Rotary District 1760 in Provence France. The 6760 team will visit Provence from May 15th till June 15th. The District 1760 Annual Conference will be in Marseilles on June 8th and 9th. In addition to Marseilles, expected visits will include: Avignon, Arles, Nimes, Pont-du-Gard, Toulon, Grasse, and St. Tropez.

Besides the spectacular Mediterranean coastline, the GSE team will see some of the best-preserved Roman ruins existing today. Many structures dating back to the early Middle Ages will be seen, as well. This will truly be a fabulous sightseeing opportunity.

How much will this cost? Nothing!! Rotary International picks up the tab. Food, lodging, and transportation will be paid for the lucky team members and their Rotarian Team leader.  .... Read more ...
