Rotary District 6760                                                Lead The Way !

Subscriber, as this Rotary year draws to a close, it's time to finalize plans to make next year the best ever!  We'll soon be sending another Rotary Blast! subscriber survey, in hopes that you'll let us know how we're doing, and what we can do better.

In addition to editing the Rotary Blast!, I plan to be available for Club Programs (on a limited basis).  The topic is "Leveraging Technology for Club PR Results".  Not coincidentally, PR is a District and RI focus this year.  If your club is interested, please let me know asap!   -- Ken Ivey

 Governor's Notes
Congratulations to the Mt. Pleasant Rotary Club!!!  The club has achieved the status of 100% Paul Harris Fellows.  What a great accomplishment!!  Paula Sands Henderson and her leadership team are to be commended.  They, too, have set a great example for the rest of us in the district to follow.  Hopefully we will be able to honor more and more 100% PHF clubs!!
While speaking about Paul Harris Fellows, let me remind you that you still have time to become a charter member of the Paul Harris Society of District 6760.  The information and/or mechanics for joining can be found on the district website (www.rotary6760.org).  I assure you that the process is very, very simple.  If, by chance, you are having any difficulty in filling out the form, please call me at 615-890-5347.

Once again, congratulations to Pickwick Landing, the newest club in District 6760.  We are making plans for a chartering banquet at Pickwick Landing State Park sometime in August.  Stay tuned for more information!!

This is an exciting month as we tie up loose ends for the 2006-07 Rotary year and make plans for another successful year in 2007-08.  Please let me know if there is any way I can be of assistance during this transition.

     Continue to Lead the Way.

News

RYLA Application Deadline Extended.

It’s time to get ready for District 6760’s Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA), experience. It will be held 6-8 July at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee.

RYLA is a three-day leadership development program targeting incoming high school sophomore and juniors. The purpose of RYLA is to develop personal leadership skills and an interest in serving the community, both core to Rotary International's mission. Having a great time while making new friends with like-minded youth from across the western half of Tennessee seems to be a natural consequence of this process.

Group Study Exchange for 2008

Deadline for applications is only 17 days away!

The 2008 exchange will be a fall/spring travel schedule with District 1030 in the Yorkshire section of England. The 6760 group will travel to British soil September 18, 2007, and return October 18, 2007. The 1030 group will arrive April 15, 2008, and they will depart approximately May 15, 2008. Their District Conference will be October 5- 7, 2007. It will take place on a ferry in the North Sea traveling to Amsterdam. They will have the added opportunity to tour Amsterdam in the exchange.

We will be having to recruit a team in May and June for the outgoing leg of the exchange. We are asking that all applications for Team Leader and Team Member be received by the GSE committee by June 23, 2007. The interviews will take place on July 7th. Applications can be downloaded from the Rotary Download Center.

The ages for team members are 25-39. They cannot have a lineal kinship with a Rotary member and have to be employed in the district. They must be able to leave their employment for approximately one month.

All applications should be mailed to:

Frank McGinley, GSE Chairman
155 Williams Street
Savannah, TN 38372.

Help in finding good team member applicants and potential Rotarian team leaders is requested from all Rotarians in the district. This should be one of the more interesting and enjoyable exchanges in recent years.

Club Announcements

Not just any soldier  (from the Rotary Club of Dickson newsletter)

AnySoldier.comAny Soldier Inc. started as a simple family effort to help our son, Army Sergeant Brian Horn, who was one of the 1,000 soldiers who parachuted into Northern Iraq on March 26th, 2003. We knew his unit, the 173rd Airborne Brigade was living under very rough conditions, and we were sending Brian care packages as often as we could.

We wanted to help the soldiers who were with Brian, so his father, himself a 20-year Army veteran, started this web site on August 26th, 2003, and asked friends and neighbors to help send their support. HERE is the original web page posted that day. The idea caught on, fast. By Christmas Eve 2003 the site looked like THIS.

The support was massive during the holidays, and many requests came to us to support other military units. On January 1st, 2004, we did just that. At the time, we projected that we would have 50 volunteer contact soldiers by Christmas. We were wrong, by June 2nd, 2004, we had our first 100, and 3 days short of a year we had 1,000!

As of now we have 3,548!!

We were contacted by an Attorney from Jones Day, Deborah Franz, who offered her help in getting us incorporated. She and Bill Zawrotny, also from Jones Day, took care of all the matters needed to get us to become “Any Soldier Inc.”, a non-profit corporation registered in the state of Maryland on June 2004.

Our application for non-profit charitable, 501(c)(3) status, was submitted to the IRS and approved on 3 August, 2004.

In August of 2005 we acquired AnyAirman.com, AnyMarine.com, AnySailor.com, and AnyCoastGuardsman.com domain names and started work on offering 5 service-specific versions of the web site.

On 24 October 2006, “Any Soldier®”, “Any Marine®”, “Any Airman®”, “Any Sailor®”, “Any Coast Guardsman®” and our heart logo all were approved by the USPTO as registered trademarks of Any Soldier Inc.

Editor's Note:  While deployed in Iraq during Desert Stom, I was a recipient of "Any Soldier" letters and packages.  There are no words to express my appreciation for the "little things" that mean so much to a soldier in a combat zone.  I still have the letters.

Verhine Scholarships Awarded to 117 Students

Last week, the Union City Rotary Club staged its 6th Annual Verhine Scholarship Program—awarding $172,500 to 117 former UCHS graduates who are currently enrolled in colleges and universities throughout the region.

The scholarships, which ranged in size from $1,000 to $2,500 per student, bring to $319,000 to total amount of scholarships awarded during a three-week period this year by the Rotary Club.  That’s roughly $4 million in scholarships the Rotary Club has awarded since 1982.

The Verhine Scholarships are endowed by a $3.5 million donation from the Vern and Fern Verhine estate.  The Verhines were longtime Union City businesspeople who had no children of their own and looked for ways to “give back” to the community they loved.

During last week’s program, vice president Barry Keathley read the names of the students, who in turn rose to tell where they were attending school and their area of study.

Congratulations to Roger Williams and his Scholarship Committee on a great year and thanks to all who made contributions and took part in the many aspects to the program.  It’s phenomenal  that a club our size can generate and administer a program of this magnitude year after year.

Another special word of thanks goes to Art Sparks, Al Creswell, Craig Atwill and Phillip Creswell and the folks at ATA Accounting for handling the scholarships and making sure they get to the right students.

Chairman Williams and President Steve Goodrich urged the students to make the most of their opportunities and, if possible, return to the Obion County area after graduation to settle down and raise their families.  They were also encouraged to make sure they helped future students with contributions to scholarship programs similar to what we have here in the Rotary Club.
